TU Dublin came into being in 2019 through the merger of three institutions — Dublin Institute of Technology, Institute of Technology Tallaght, and Institute of Technology Blanchardstown. DIT itself traced back to 1887, so the history runs longer than the new name suggests. The result is the largest higher education institution in Ireland by student numbers, with around 28,000 students spread across three campuses in Dublin.
The main campus at Grangegorman, in Dublin 7 near Smithfield and the Luas red line, is a genuinely impressive piece of urban development. For most of DIT's existence its facilities were scattered in rented and converted buildings around the city centre. The Grangegorman build gave the university a proper, purpose-designed home for the first time — something that was a long time coming and makes a real difference to the day-to-day experience of studying there. The Tallaght and Blanchardstown campuses serve south-west and north-west Dublin respectively.
The IoT background shapes how programmes are put together. Courses tend to be structured with industry contact built in rather than treated as an optional extra — placements, live projects, and employer links show up across the master's catalogue. TU Dublin also covers subject areas that the traditional universities tend not to touch: culinary arts and food product development, hospitality management, event management, interior design, and fashion buying sit alongside the computing and engineering programmes. If your field sits somewhere in that range, the course selection here is worth looking at closely.

Why students choose TU Dublin
Largest university in Ireland
About 28,000 students across Grangegorman, Tallaght, and Blanchardstown. That scale means a wide course choice and a large student community — useful when you're arriving from abroad and don't know anyone yet.
Grangegorman campus
The main campus sits in Dublin 7, a short walk from Smithfield and the Luas red line. It's purpose-built and modern, replacing the scattered DIT buildings that were spread across the city for decades. Getting around is straightforward from day one.
Applied and industry-focused
TU Dublin grew out of institutes of technology, so programmes tend to be built around industry contact rather than theoretical study alone. Placements, industry projects, and employer links are part of many master's programmes from the start.
Design, arts and hospitality
TU Dublin has one of the wider creative arts and hospitality faculties in Ireland. If your field is design, culinary arts, fashion, or event management, the course options here are hard to match at other Irish universities.
Computing and engineering
Strong programmes in software development, data science, electronic engineering, IoT, and sustainable energy. Fees for these areas are competitive, and the applied focus suits students who want work-relevant skills rather than purely academic training.
Fees below TCD and UCD
Most TU Dublin master's programmes sit between €13,500 and €21,750 for non-EU students. That's meaningfully less than you'd pay at Trinity or UCD for equivalent-level study, which matters when you're covering tuition from outside the EU.
