What is the PPS number?

The PPS number is a number unique to you, which prevents Emergency Tax from being deducted from your salary while you work in Ireland. If you work without a PPS number, 40% of your salary is deducted by the Irish government as an Emergency Tax.

** You get the refund after your PPS number comes.

How to get a PPS number?

There are two ways to get a PPS number;

1. Finding a Job Legally

The company you will work for must write a letter (Proof of Employment) with your information and address in order to receive PPS on your behalf.

2. Stating You Want to Get a Driving License in Ireland

Unfortunately, this method no longer works. In this way, the process can be accelerated by applying without finding a job and uploading the GNIB and Proof of Employment in the document update. However, this can slow down the process even more.

What Are the Documents Required to Get a PPS Number?

As explained above, the required documents are as follows;

  • Proof of employment
  • Bank statement
  • Passport
  • GNIB Card
  • Proof of address; You can show the envelope that your GNIB card came in or your bank statement, since your address is written on it, it serves as proof of address.

Where to Apply for a PPS Number?

To get a PPS number, you first make an online appointment at www.mywelfare.ie. The page here redirects you to www.mygovid.ie. Previously, it was possible to apply face-to-face by appointment, but now it is only done online.

When Will the PPS Number Application be Finalized?

You go at your appointment time and complete your transactions in about 15 minutes. PPS transactions are concluded in a minimum of 2 months as of 2022. After the application is made, you will see the text ‘’application under review’’. Don't worry if this disappears 🙂 It means that the application has been completed. However, if it does not reach you within 2 weeks after the text is lost, you should send an e-mail.

I Got My PPS Number, What Should I Do Now?

After your PPS number comes, you need to create a revenue account. In order to create an account, you must first register. After registering for revenue, a password will be sent to you again by email so that you can log in to revenue. After your password is received, you can log in to revenue with your PPS number and the password that came in the email. It is very important that you can log in to revenue because you will follow up on important information such as tax refund, information about your workplace, start date, and termination date of employment.

If you are going to use getting a driver's license as an excuse, you need to take the "Driver theory test application" form with you. You can fill it in there if you want. (Some friends say that it must be filled during the appointment, but there is no such warning on the official website.)

Note: Usually it is not easy to get a PPS appointment in Dublin. If you wish, you can make your appointment earlier by looking at Kildare or other smaller places.

When you go there, you fill out a simple 1-page form and they take your photo. The process takes about 10 minutes.
